Dr Denis Mukwege, a Congolese gynaecologist who specialises in treating victims of rape and extreme sexual violence, will receive the 2014 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in a ceremony on Wednesday at noon, followed by a joint press conference with President Schulz at 12.30.

The Ukrainian EuroMaidan movement and Leyla Yunus, an imprisoned Azerbaijani human rights activist were the other finalists for the 2014 Sakharov Prize. They were selected by the foreign affairs and development committees on 7 October.
