THE MEDIALIBRARY COLLECTIONS - 10th ANNIVERSARY OF THE 2004 EU ENLARGEMENT

On 1 May 2004 ten new countries joined the European Union.

The historic expansion of 15 - 25 Member States was the culmination of a long accession leading to the reunification of a Europe that had been divided for half a century by the Iron Curtain and the Cold War.  The addition of eight Central and Eastern European countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia), and two Mediterranean islands (Cyprus and Malta) added some 75 million inhabitants and over 700,000 square kilometers to the Union.
