Background Concluding Plenary Session of the European Parlamentary Week on the European Semester for the Economic Policy Coordination was held today. Martin Schulz, EP President; José Manuel Durão Barroso, EC President; Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council and Sean Barrett, Irish Parliament Chair in representation of the Irish Presidency in the Council spoke to the MEP's together with around 100 national MP's. Three objectives were finally concluded in order to better coordinate European economic policies: to increase the member state budgetary discipline, to prevent and correct excessive deficits or surpluses and to monitor progress to achieve the EU 2020 growth and employment targets.

The European Semester

The European Semester was introduced in 2011 as a response to the crisis. Every year the Commission publishes its annual growth survey, which sets out priorities and identifies countries at risk. Member states are then asked to endorse the priorities at the Council's spring summit.
