Background MEPs discussed the economic policy with Spanish minister within the framework of economic policy coordination at the EU level. The meeting was held as part of the so-called economic dialogue introduced in the six pack legislation on economic policy coordination, which allows MEPs to invite national representatives from countries that have been told to correct excessive deficits to an exchange of views at the European Parliament. Members have already had such meetings with Hungarian and Belgian ministers.

A recently published forecast by the European Commission predicts that Spain's economy will shrink by 1.4% year-on-year both this year and in 2013 as budget cuts affect short-term growth prospects.
