Background Margaret Thatcher (13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013), was a British politician, the longest-serving (1979–1990) Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of the 20th century, and the only woman to have held the post. On two occasions she was President-in-office of the Council (1981 and 1986). In 1981, she was the first Head of Government of the Member State occupying the Presidency attending a session of the European Parliament for the purpose of giving an account of a meeting of the European Council. The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz made the following statement on the passing away of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher: "Margaret Thatcher marked British and European political life. Despite our clear political differences, Margaret Thatcher is a figure of historic significance. Margaret Thatcher at the beginning of her tenure was a committed European, signing and pushing for the single European act which transformed the EU single market. No matter whether one agrees with her policies or not, Margaret Thatcher showed that politics still has the capacity to be a force for change. My thoughts are with her family and friends."
